Americans know that eating out is a treat, but grabbing a burger is just a quick meal.

And despite rising prices, Americans love to treat themselves to having someone else bring them their meals.

But this popular hamburger chain just incurred the wrath of customers because their price increases have made “grabbing a burger” cost more than a sit-down meal.

Five Guys accused of committing “highway robbery”

Five Guys is a popular hamburger restaurant with locations all over the country.

However, a receipt from the restaurant recently went viral after a customer posted his $24 bill – which was only the cost of a meal for one.

The image of the receipt has social media users broiling with anger, and it’s the latest proof that Bidenomics is still not working concerning high inflation.

On the social media platform X, user Wall Street Silver posted a photo of the receipt, which he claims he took from Reddit.

The user wrote, “Five Guys prices are out of control. $24 for one person.”

According to the details on the receipt, a bacon cheeseburger cost the customer $12.49, a regular soda cost $2.89, and a small serving of fries cost an incredible $5.19.

The total for the order was $21.91 with tax, and the diner added a $2.19 tip, bringing the final total to a whopping $24.10.

At the time of publishing, the X post has been viewed over 25.2 million times and is stirring up debate over the popular fast-food chain’s high prices.

Wall Street Silver added, “I guess I was expecting about $12 to $15 per person for Five Guys. $22 (without tip) just seems to cross a line. What is the right amount these days?”

Five Guys isn’t the only fast-food restaurant that has been raising prices after inflation soared over 9% at its peak.

Top-line inflation has come down a bit, but food prices remain high both at restaurants and in grocery stores.

For example, beef prices are up over 7%, and steak is up over 10%, according to the latest reading of the consumer price index.

The beloved chicken restaurant Chick-fil-A has increased prices by 21% since early 2022, and Domino’s Pizza CFO Sandeep Reddy said that his company is planning “for a modest price increase in the low-single digits.”

Burger joint faces backlash

After the Five Guys receipt went viral, users took to social media to express their anger.

One user wrote, “5 dollars for a small fry is highway robbery. It is literally just a potato and some salt. Cost them a quarter to make.”

Another user commented, “I know a way to save $2.19 on that real quick,” referring to the cost of the beverage.

Yet another X user commented, “You ain’t seen nothing yet. Wait until that $20 an hour minimum wage in California kicks in.”

Some social media users were not shocked about the high price, with user Ian Miles Cheong writing, “Five Guys has always been more premium than others, though.”

But one user disagreed, saying, “Five Guys was always overpriced. Same meal was $15 ten years ago.”
