This Congressman wants to make sure no one forgets the Laken Riley atrocity

The murder of 22-year-old nursing college student Laken Riley was a national tragedy that could have been avoided if Joe Biden would have controlled the border.

Left-wing progressives want to sweep this tragedy under the rug or blame Republicans for a criminal illegal alien murdering an innocent woman.

But this one Republican Congressman wants to make sure this tragedy is not forgotten by introducing this piece of legislation.

Representative Mike Collins introduces new legislation

Republican Representative Mike Collins of Georgia is introducing new legislation that would require ICE to detail illegal aliens charged with theft or burglary.

The legislative proposal comes after an illegal alien accused of similar crimes was released and then later charged with the murder of Georgia college student Laken Riley.

The “Laken Riley Act” is aptly named after the young 22-year-old nursing student Laken Hope Riley, who was recently found dead on the University of Georgia campus — it was later revealed that she was murdered.

Jose Antonio Ibarra is an illegal alien from Venezuela who has been charged with her brutal murder.

He had already been arrested several times before the murder but was never detained by ICE.

Before the felony murder charge, Ibarra was arrested for a DUI and for driving without a license, according to a press release from the Middle District of Georgia U.S. Attorney’s Office, which cited a sworn affidavit and criminal complaint against Ibarra.

Police say he was also charged with shoplifting in October 2023.

Collins says that his new bill would have required ICE to detain Ibarra after the first offenses, which means he would have been held under ICE supervision before the murder of Riley.

The Congressman represents Georgia’s 10th Congressional District of Athens, which is where the murder occurred.

He said Riley’s death should be a “wakeup call” for Americans, and the bill’s main purpose is to fight the “illegal crime wave” that he credits to the current border crisis.

Collins told Fox News Digital, “The senseless murder of Laken Riley by Jose Ibarra, who had no business being in this country, was another wakeup call as Americans experience an illegal alien crime wave because of Joe Biden’s open border and local sanctuary city policies.”

Collins is focused on preventing further tragedies

Congressman Collins said the legislation would help to prevent similar tragedies from occurring because of the open southern border.

He continued, “I wish we could bring Laken back, but we must now turn our focus to ensuring this doesn’t happen to another American. That’s why I introduced the Laken Riley Act.”

Collins says the legislation would “require Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to issue a detainer for illegal aliens who are charged or cited with local theft or burglary. More serious crimes already require ICE to issue detainers but had Athens, GA Police reached out to ICE about Jose Ibarra when he was cited for shoplifting, and ICE issued a detainer and picked him up, Laken Riley would be alive.”

Additionally, the bill would allow individual states to sue for injunctive relief against the federal government “if an immigration-related action harms the state or its citizens.”
