Tom Brady is arguably the best quarterback in NFL history and though “retired,” he still stays in phenomenal shape.
And New England has a new coach, who is desperate to turn around the franchise.
But this surprising offer from New England’s new coach got the rumor mill churning.
New era in New England
Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady led the team to franchise Super Bowl wins in 20 seasons together.
But nothing lasts forever, and the Patriots are in rebuild mode with both Belichick and Brady now gone.
Brady departed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the 2019-20 season, and won his seventh Super Bowl ring in his first year with the team.
Belichick was forced out by the Patriots after an abysmal 2023-24 season.
He interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons job, but ultimately did not get hired.
For the first time since the 1999 season, a head coach other than Bill Belichick will be patrolling the sidelines for the New England Patriots.
Owner Bob Kraft replaced Belichick with former player Jerod Mayo, who won a Super Bowl with the team.
After a four-win season, Mayo has his work cut out for him.
Brady comeback?
Brady has retired twice, but he still might not be done.
Brady appeared on the DeepCuts podcast with barber VicBlends, and suggested that he was open to another NFL comeback.
He said, “I’m not opposed to it . . . I don’t know if they are going to let me if I become an owner of an NFL team. I’m always going to be in good shape. I’ll always be able to throw the ball. So, to come in for a little bit, like [Michael Jordan] coming back, I don’t know if they would let me. But I wouldn’t be opposed to it.”
Brady is attempting to get a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders.
With Brady gone and 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones not living up to his draft status, the Patriots had to get a young quarterback.
They drafted North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Needless to say, Brady leaving the door open created major buzz in Boston sports media.
Mayo was asked about the possibility of his former teammate coming back.
He told local sports talk radio station WEEI, “I love Tom, and the door is always open if he wants to come in here and coach.”
Mayo was less committed about Brady coming back as a player.
He continued, “But as far as going on the field, I don’t know. . . But if he comes here, once again, going back to the, ‘Hey, the best player will play,’ you’ve gotta come in here and compete, and he loves competition. I doubt he’s gonna be walking through these doors any time soon.”
Brady has plenty of good options on the table.
He signed a 10-year deal with Fox Sports worth $375 million to be the network’s lead color commentator in the booth.
Brady once said that he wanted to play until he’s 50, but he fell a few years short.
Nevertheless, he had a legendary career, and all parties have moved on.
