HHS Secretary Kennedy Cuts Off Medicaid Cash for Child Sex Change Procedures
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on August 11 that Medicaid and CHIP will no longer pay a dime for puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or surgeries on minors.
The rule takes effect October 13.
Kids currently on hormone therapy get six months to taper off under a doctor's care.
Mental health coverage stays exactly where it was.
"Today, we are ending federal taxpayer funding for sex-rejecting procedures on children," Kennedy said.
He didn't hedge, didn't soften it, didn't call it complicated.
CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz backed him up without blinking.
"Children deserve our protection, not experimental interventions that pose serious risks," Oz said.
Your tax dollars funded infertility, impaired sexual function, diminished bone density, and altered brain development in children too young to sign a car loan.
Now they don't.
Do No Harm and Parent Groups Say This Fix Was Two Decades Overdue
Dr. Stanley Goldfarb runs Do No Harm, a physicians' group that's been fighting this fight since before it was politically safe to fight it.
He called the new rule "a critical step toward prohibiting the use of taxpayer dollars on harmful and irreversible sex-rejecting surgeries on minors."
Alleigh Marré of the American Parents Coalition put it just as plainly.
"Evidence continues to mount that allowing children to undergo irreversible sex-change procedures is dangerous to their long-term health and wellness," Marré said.
HHS didn't invent this skepticism out of thin air.
The United Kingdom's Cass Report spent years reviewing the evidence behind pediatric gender medicine and found the entire field was built on studies too weak to support the claims doctors were making to parents.
Britain shut down its youth gender clinic because of that report.
European countries followed.
America's medical establishment kept cashing Medicaid checks and calling anyone who asked questions a bigot.
That's the mechanism here.
This isn't a culture war stunt Kennedy dreamed up on a Tuesday.
It's the United States finally catching up to a body of evidence our own health agencies spent years pretending didn't exist.
Chloe Cole didn't need a peer-reviewed British report to know something went wrong with her body.
She lived it, and she's been telling anyone who'll listen ever since.
The activists who spent a decade calling her a bigot for saying so now have to explain why the federal government just agreed with her.
Groups like Advocates for Trans Equality are already howling that the rule is "vilifying and attacking the health care rights of trans people."
Notice what they're not doing: pointing to a single study that survives the Cass Report's scrutiny.
They can't, because it doesn't exist.
Democrats spent years calling this "gender-affirming care" like the label alone settled the science.
It never did.
Republicans in Congress have pushed bills to defund these procedures since at least 2023, and state legislatures from Texas to Florida got there years before Washington caught up.
The pattern is the same every time: parents and doctors raise red flags, activist groups scream bigotry, and eventually the evidence wins anyway.
Kennedy just made sure your Medicaid dollars stopped being the exception.
Six months from now, hospitals that built entire clinics around these procedures are going to have a very different balance sheet, and the activists who built careers defending them are going to need a new talking point.
