Twenty eight years later, Hillary Clinton's office just posted a want ad for an intern of her own.
The one requirement she listed for the job has conservatives howling for a reason tied straight to her husband.
The Exact Words in Hillary's Job Listing That Set Off the Internet
The Clinton Foundation posted a fall internship at Hillary Clinton's Madison Avenue office in New York City.
The listing runs September 9 through November 13, and it is unpaid.
Interns need proof of academic credit just to apply, and the posting makes clear they get no employee benefits.
They are expected to put in 25 to 29 hours a week researching, drafting briefing memos, transcribing speeches, handling mail, and scheduling senior staff.
Then came the line that broke the internet.
The Clinton Foundation wants an intern with "a high level of professionalism and discretion."
Conservatives online did not need a translator.
One commenter cracked that Bill "lost intern privileges" a long time ago.
Commentator Kurt Schlichter put it more bluntly online, writing that Bill "puts the 'in' in intern."
A poster going by @VetWarrior76 joked the ideal candidate should already be comfortable around "cocktail dresses and cigars."
Someone else wondered out loud whether Monica Lewinsky was still available, adding that "she was a real team player."
Nobody had to explain the joke.
Bill's Team Wants Discretion Too and Will Pay You Barely Enough to Live
Bill Clinton's office posted its own opening the same week.
The role is "special projects associate," and it pays $50,000 to $55,000 a year.
The listing includes preparing correspondence, coordinating travel, managing calendars, and drafting agendas – all while "using discretion in scheduling."
Yes, Bill Clinton's own job posting uses the word discretion too.
Critics online pointed out that $50,000 barely covers a studio apartment in Manhattan, let alone the experience the listing demands.
Democrats built their entire modern platform around the phrase "living wage."
Now the party's most famous power couple can't manage to pay their own intern anything at all, and they're offering a salary for a full time associate that would make a barista blush.
Why the Clintons Need the Help More Than the Interns Do
This isn't really about the money, or maybe it is.
The Clinton Foundation's donations collapsed by nearly 75 percent from their 2016 peak, falling from $62.9 million a year to just over $16 million.
Hillary Clinton hasn't held office since leaving the State Department in 2013, and she hasn't run for anything since losing to Donald Trump in 2016.
This is not the first time the Clintons have badly misjudged how their money talk sounds to the public.
Back in 2014, Hillary told ABC News that she and Bill were "dead broke" when they left the White House in 2001 – the same year financial disclosures showed the couple pulled in nearly $12 million.
The internship posting is that same instinct wearing a new disguise – ask the public for cheap labor while sitting on a foundation endowment reportedly worth more than $235 million.
Bill Clinton has spent nearly three decades trying to rebuild a reputation that started collapsing in 1998, and every gala, every fundraising email, and every foundation hire is part of that project.
An unpaid internship listing that has the entire internet joking about Monica Lewinsky is not exactly moving that project forward.
Expect the usual damage control – a quiet statement about "opportunity for young people," maybe a soft interview where Hillary calls the reaction unfair.
None of it will change what actually happened here.
The Clintons went looking for free labor and a $50,000 assistant, and the only thing they successfully recruited was an entire internet's worth of jokes about the one scandal they can never outrun.
