Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie killed his own sputtering Presidential run before a single vote was cast.
Christie has long been well-known for being a bully, a braggart, and a brash demeanor.
And while Christie might be out of the presidential race, it’s certainly not keeping him from talking even more trash about his former opponents.
“She’s going to get smoked”
Chris Christie held a town hall event in New Hampshire to speak to constituents and tell the nation he planned to withdraw from the Republican 2024 primary race.
But the politician was caught on a hot mic talking trash about his opponents, most notably former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley.
Some people thought Christie was planning to endorse Haley during the town hall, but the exact opposite happened.
During the livestream portion of the event which aired on YouTube, the wait screen was showing, and a microphone suddenly turned on while Christie was speaking mid-sentence.
He said, “I mean, look, she spent $68 million so far, just on TV. Spent $68 million so far, $59 million by DeSantis. And we spent 12. I mean, who’s punching above their weight, and who’s getting a return on their investment, you know?”
Christie continued, “And she’s going to get smoked. And you and I both know it. She’s not up to this.”
As he started to talk about Ron DeSantis, the mic was cut off.
He began to say, “You know, I talked to – DeSantis called me, petrified that I would…” until the sentence was cut short on the livestream.
While no one knows exactly what he was going to say, some people assume that Christie was saying that DeSantis was concerned he’d endorse Haley at the town hall.
The livestream video has since been removed from the YouTube platform.
Regardless of how Chris Christie feels, many people think his decision to drop out of the race will be a boost for Haley in New Hampshire, and she’s currently a close second in the polls.
Meanwhile, Christie announced his withdrawal during the town hall, saying, “I would rather lose by telling the truth than lie in order to win. It’s clear to me tonight that there isn’t a path for me to win the nomination, which is why I’m suspending my campaign.”
Opponents sound off
Not long after the commentary was released by Mediaite and other outlets, Trump and DeSantis weighed in on social media.
DeSantis took to X, the social media outlet formerly known as Twitter, where he wrote, “I agree with Christie that Nikki Haley is ‘going to get smoked.’”
And Trump threw his opinion into the fray on his own social media outlet, Truth Social.
Donald Trump wrote, “I hear Chris Christie is dropping out of the race today – I might even get to like him again! Anyway, he was just caught on a hot mic making a very truthful statement: ‘She’s going to get smoked… You and I both know it, she’s not up to this.’”
