In 2022, Chinese companies were involved in 23 percent of global pharmaceutical deals worth more than $50 million.
By 2024 that number jumped to 44 percent.
In 2025, Chinese startups pulled in nearly 70 percent of all global pharma deal spending, a staggering $137.7 billion.
Patrick Malone of KdT Ventures didn't mince words about the trajectory: "The slope of that change is so steep, it's very easy to extrapolate where this goes."
Tim Opler of Stifel Institutional put it even more bluntly: "China could be a problem."
Senator John Cornyn flagged the trend directly to his followers, linking to a report from The Free Press.
“Is China going to control your medicine?” the Texas Senator captioned his post, asking the question millions of Americans have rarely been forced to think about.
This Is the Same Playbook China Ran On Manufacturing
America has already lived through this movie once.
The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission has warned for years that China effectively "owns" America's generic drug supply chain, from raw ingredients to finished pills sitting in your medicine cabinet.
COVID exposed exactly how dangerous that dependency really was, when Americans discovered the masks, gloves, and basic medical supplies they needed most were sitting in Chinese warehouses instead of American factories.
China didn't take over generic drugs by accident.
It ran the exact same strategy it used on steel, solar panels, and rare earth minerals: undercut on price for a decade, let American competitors go bankrupt, and end up owning the entire supply chain once nobody else is left standing.
Now it's not just cheap generics – Beijing is buying its way into the actual pipeline that produces tomorrow's cancer drugs and gene therapies.
Republicans in Congress Are Already Moving
Picture the phone call nobody in Washington wants to make: a health crisis breaks out with China, and pharmacy shelves across America go empty within a week.
That should make you furious.
The BIOSECURE Act would cut off federally funded American health programs from doing business with Chinese biotech firms tied to the CCP, and it just landed inside this year's defense bill.
Trump has separately proposed tariffs as high as 100 percent on pharmaceutical imports specifically to force generic drug production back onto American soil.
Congress and the White House are finally attacking the same problem from two directions, because Beijing spent a decade building the exact kind of leverage over America that should never have been allowed to exist in the first place.
Cornyn's question wasn't rhetorical.
That's not a business story.
That's a knife Beijing gets to hold to America's throat every time the pill bottle runs low.
