The backlash against woke ideology taking over sports continues to grow.
More and more athletes are speaking out against the awful trend of the Left turning the field of play into another battlefield in their culture wars.
And now a World Series champion delivered one brutal message to national anthem protestors.
Pitcher David “Boomer” Wells served as the ace of the pitching staff for the 1998 New York Yankees, a team that won 114 regular season games and is considered one of the greatest squads of all time after they romped their way to the franchise’s 24th championship.
Wells returned to Yankee stadium this season for Old Timer’s Day and took the field with a piece of tape covering the Nike logo on his jersey.
When asked afterwards why he put tape over the “swoosh” logo, Boomer had a simple answer.
“I hate Nike,” Wells declared. “They’re woke.”
Wells – a notorious drinker who once threw a perfect game in 1998 against the Minnesota Twins while hungover from staying out at bars until just hours before the game – also declared he would never drink Bud Light again due to their sponsorship deal with transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
In an appearance on Outkick’s Don’t @ Me podcast, Wells told host Dan Dakich that he opposes woke ideology in sports because “It’s my beliefs.”
“I don’t believe in all these companies coming into sports and trying to create a woke atmosphere,” Wells continued.
Wells went on to explain why he opposed Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the national anthem, a horrible trend that unfortunately spread to other sports.
Wells told Dakich that Kaepernick was entitled to his own views but that kneeling for the national anthem was an empty gesture that only served to insult the memories of soldiers who paid the ultimate price in defending American freedom.
“When Kaepernick took to the knee … it’s a little disrespect to me,” Wells said. “Your beliefs are your beliefs … I don’t have any problem with that, but don’t go out [on] national TV and take a knee for what that is because that doesn’t prove anything in my mind.”
Sports used to be a unifying institution in American life.
There were no Republican or Democrat teams as fans of all backgrounds and beliefs could put aside their differences for a few hours to root on a common goal.
But the Left changed all that because to liberals, everything is politics, and they won’t cede one inch in their campaign to impose their agenda on American life.
